Rendered Small is a fifteen minute documentary directed by Marsha Gordon + Louis Cherry about the private collection of American folk art buildings that have been meticulously curated and displayed by Steven Burke and Randy Campbell in their home in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Check out our short teaser and extended teaser; the 2014 New York Times  profile of the collection; the Raleigh News and Observer story about the collection and Rendered Small; our interview about the documentary on WUNC's The State of ThingsNCSU's News Story about the making of the documentary; and the American Folk Art Buildings website.

These small structures are whimsical and far-ranging: a demolished church in the suburbs of Orlando, FL; a long gone train station in Milwaukee, WI; a water tower that still stands on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, IL; Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA; Ferris wheels, houses, movie theaters, gas stations, bowling alleys, and much more.  Made between the 1870s and the 1950s, these structures offer a fascinating glimpse at America's architectural history.

Trying to describe what we experienced during our tour of Steven and Randy's collection, nobody could quite imagine the collection or the amazing environs in which it is displayed.  This is what inspired the making of Rendered Small, a short film that shows these delightful structures to an audience that would not otherwise get to see them, while also conveying, in the voices of its collectors, what it’s like to live amongst so many treasures and, as a married couple, with each other’s obsessions.
